Asphalt Thickness & Base

Base depth is your compacted crushed stone or gravel section. Patch work often uses 0 if the base stays in place.

Material Assumptions

Keep the default unless your supplier gave you a specific density for the mix.

240 sq ft
Asphalt Volume
240 × 0.25 × 1.05
2.33 cu yd
Asphalt Tons
63 × 145 ÷ 2000
4.57 tons
Base Volume
240 × 0.5 × 1.05
4.67 cu yd
Material Cost
Price per ton not enabled

This is a planning estimate. Actual yield will shift with the mix design, compaction, surface prep, and your local supplier.

How to Use This Calculator

1. Measure the footprint

Enter length and width for the paved area. Use feet for most residential jobs, or meters if your supplier quotes metric.

2. Match the section

Set the asphalt thickness and the compacted base depth. The presets cover driveways, parking pads, paths, and patch jobs.

3. Order by tons

Use the tons result when you call the plant, and the base cubic yards result when you order crushed stone or gravel.

Professional Paving Formulas & Calculation Steps

Asphalt tons = (length × width × thickness × waste) × density ÷ 2,000

Example Calculation:

  • • Driveway: 20 ft × 12 ft × 3 in of asphalt
  • • Area = 240 sq ft
  • • Asphalt depth = 3 in ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
  • • Raw asphalt volume = 240 × 0.25 = 60 cu ft
  • • With 5% waste = 63 cu ft
  • • Tons = 63 × 145 ÷ 2,000 = 4.57 tons

This estimate follows the standard paving workflow: calculate volume first, apply the mix density, then convert the final weight to tons.
