- • Prime the repaired area first so the finish coat blends more evenly.
Repair Examples
Which Repair Method Should I Use?
Spackle Only
Best for: Nail pops, pin holes, shallow dents, and tiny doorknob marks
Avoid when: Loose gypsum, broken paper faces, cracks, or soft water-damaged drywall
Mesh Patch + Compound
Best for: Clean medium holes that still have solid drywall around the opening
Avoid when: Crumbly edges, long cracks, or patches that need backing support
Cut-In Drywall Patch
Best for: Large holes, broken drywall sections, and repairs that need a new patch piece
Avoid when: Tiny cosmetic damage where a full cut-in repair is overkill
Replace Damaged Section
Best for: Soft, swollen, or stained drywall after a leak or recurring moisture issue
Avoid when: Patching over wet drywall before the cavity has dried out
How to Use This Calculator
- Pick the damage type — Choose hole, crack, water damage, or corner repair so the calculator can suggest the right fix.
- Set the patch size — Use a preset or enter your own size. Measure the damaged area, not the whole wall.
- Adjust the wall texture — Smooth blends fast, while orange peel and popcorn usually take more finish work.
- Toggle paint and labor — Need paint or labor in the estimate? Turn them on.
- Review the repair plan — Skim the method, shopping list, timeline, and DIY fit before you buy materials.
How We Calculate Patch Materials & Repair Cost
Method Assumptions
- • Tiny holes: spackle only
- • Medium holes: mesh patch + compound
- • Large holes: cut-in drywall patch
- • Cracks: tape + compound
- • Water damage: replace damaged section
Texture Assumptions
- • Smooth: 1.0× finish effort
- • Light orange peel: 1.1×
- • Heavy texture: 1.2×
- • Popcorn: 1.3× and usually harder to blend cleanly
Example Calculation
- Repair: medium wall hole, 8" × 8", quantity 1
- Repair area: 8 × 8 ÷ 144 = 0.44 sq ft
- Recommended method: mesh patch + compound
- Texture: smooth wall = 1.0× finish factor
- Compound: 0.44 sq ft × method factor = about 0.5 qt
Method assumptions come from common Gypsum Association / USG patching practices. Labor and cost ranges are rough planning guides only and should be checked against local drywall repair rates.
Drywall Repair Timeline Guide
| Repair Type | Active Work | Dry Time | Paint-Ready |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small Hole or Dent | 30-45 min | 1-2 hr | Same day after sanding |
| Mesh Patch Repair | 45-75 min | 4-6 hr | Later the same day or next day |
| Cut-In Patch | 1.5-2.5 hr | 6-12 hr | Usually next day |
| Water-Damaged Section | 2-3 hr | 8-24 hr after patching | Next day or later after full drying |
Drying slows down on textured walls, in humid rooms, and on ceiling patches where heavier coats are common.
