Which underlayment for your flooring?

Roll count is the same math either way — the product type depends on your floor.

Laminate

Foam or combo underlayment is common. If the plank already has attached pad, skip a second foam layer unless the maker says otherwise.

LVP / SPC

Many rigid-core planks ship with attached pad. Extra foam can make the floor feel spongy — follow the flooring brand first.

Engineered wood

Felt, cork, or brand-approved foam are typical. Moisture barriers matter over concrete — check the install guide.

How the calculator works

  1. Room area = length × width (sq ft).
  2. Order area = area × (100 + waste%) ÷ 100, then round to two decimals.
  3. Rolls to buy = ceil(order area ÷ coverage per roll).

Frequently asked questions

Multiply room length by width for square footage, add about 10% for cuts and seams, then divide by the coverage printed on the roll (often 100 or 200 sq ft). Round up to whole rolls — that's what you buy.
Big-box foam underlayment often covers about 100 sq ft per roll; larger rolls around 200 sq ft are common too. Always use the coverage on your package — brands vary. Thickness (2 mm vs 3 mm, etc.) is a product choice; it doesn't change the roll-count math above.
Floating laminate usually needs a pad unless it has attached underlayment. Many LVP/SPC products already include pad — adding another layer can void the warranty. Read the flooring instructions before you order rolls.
Start at 10% for seams, doorways, and odd cuts. Bump higher for many small rooms or lots of closets. Full-roll rounding already adds a little buffer.
