How to Use This Calculator

  1. Measure your room — Get the length and width. For multiple rooms, calculate each separately.
  2. Select flooring type — Different materials have different removal costs. Carpet is cheap, tile is expensive.
  3. Choose removal method — DIY with hand tools is cheapest. Machine rental speeds things up. Pros cost more but handle everything.
  4. Add haul-away if needed — Old flooring has to go somewhere. Most contractors include this, DIYers need a dumpster.
  5. Budget for subfloor repair — Expect some damage. 10-20% of the area usually needs attention.

How We Calculate

Total = (Area × Labor Rate × Method) + Haul-Away + Subfloor Repair

Example Calculation:

  • • Room: 15 ft × 20 ft = 300 sq ft
  • • Vinyl flooring: $1.50-3/sq ft labor
  • • Manual removal: 1.0× multiplier
  • • Labor: 300 × $1.50-3 = $450-900
  • • Haul-away: 300 × $0.25-0.75 = $75-225
  • • Total: $525-1,125
