Pro Tips
  • • Buy all paint from the same batch to ensure consistent color
  • • Keep 1 extra quart for future touch-ups — store in a cool, dry place

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Pick a room preset or enter dimensions — Use a tape measure to get length, width, and wall height. Or pick a preset like "Standard Bedroom (12×12)" to get started fast.
  2. Count doors and windows — Each door deducts 21 sq ft, each window deducts 12 sq ft. This prevents overbuying.
  3. Choose your paint finish and quality — Eggshell is the most popular for walls. Premium paint covers more per gallon and may not need primer.
  4. Check surface condition — New drywall or a big color change? The calculator adds primer automatically.
  5. Review your shopping list — Gallons of paint, primer (if needed), and a cost breakdown — everything in one place.

How We Calculate

Gallons = (Net Area × (1 + Waste%)) ÷ Coverage per Gallon × Coats
Standard coverage: 350-400 sq ft/gallon | Standard door: 7' × 3' = 21 sq ft

Coverage by Finish

  • • Flat/Matte: 400 sq ft/gal
  • • Eggshell: 375 sq ft/gal — most popular
  • • Satin: 375 sq ft/gal
  • • Semi-Gloss: 350 sq ft/gal
  • • High-Gloss: 350 sq ft/gal

When You Need Primer

  • • New drywall or bare wood
  • • Patched or repaired walls
  • • Dark-to-light color change
  • • Stain blocking (water/smoke)
  • Skip primer with premium paint + good walls

Example: 12×12 Room with 8 ft Ceilings

  • Perimeter: 2 × (12 + 12) = 48 ft
  • Wall area: 48 × 8 = 384 sq ft
  • Minus 1 door + 2 windows: 384 - 45 = 339 sq ft
  • With 10% waste: 339 × 1.1 = 373 sq ft
  • Gallons per coat (eggshell): 373 ÷ 375 ≈ 1.0 gal
  • Two coats: 1.0 × 2 = 2 gallons
