Material Coverage & Waste Cheat Sheet
The numbers DIYers look up most: how much to add for waste, how far materials go, standard sheet and bag sizes, and the conversions you need before you order.

Standard Waste Factors
Extra material to order on top of the measured area, so cuts and scrap don't leave you short.
| Material | Standard | Complex / Diagonal |
|---|---|---|
| Tile (floor & wall) | 10% | 15% diagonal / patterned |
| Hardwood / laminate / vinyl plank | 10% | 15% diagonal / irregular |
| Plywood & sheet goods | 10% | 12–15% roofs / many cuts |
| Pavers | 7–8% straight | 10–15% herringbone / curves |
| Brick | 5% straight walls | 8–10% corners / veneer |
| Carpet | 10% | 15% stairs / irregular |
| Concrete (pour) | 10% | for spillage / uneven base |
Waste guidance per TCNA, NWFA, APA, and ICPI installation practice.
Coverage Rates
How far one unit goes. Use as planning ranges — exact coverage varies by product and surface.
| Material | Covers | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Paint (1 coat) | 350–400 sq ft / gallon | Flat ~400, eggshell ~350 |
| Primer | ~300 sq ft / gallon | Higher on smooth surfaces |
| Mulch / topsoil | 1 cu yd = 162 sq ft @ 2" | 108 sq ft @ 3", 81 sq ft @ 4" |
| Plywood / drywall sheet | 4×8 sheet = 32 sq ft | Before waste & rounding |
| Modular brick | ~6.86 bricks / sq ft | With 3/8" mortar joint |
Coverage per Paint Quality Institute (PQI), USDA NRCS, APA, and Gypsum Association references.
Standard Sheet, Bag & Unit Sizes
| Item | Size / Yield |
|---|---|
| Plywood sheet | 4×8 = 32 sq ft · 4×10 = 40 · 5×5 = 25 |
| Drywall sheet | 4×8 = 32 sq ft · 4×12 = 48 sq ft |
| Sod roll | 2×5 ft = 10 sq ft |
| Wallpaper roll (US) | Single ≈ 27 sq ft · Double ≈ 56 sq ft |
| Concrete bag yield | 60 lb ≈ 0.45 cu ft · 80 lb ≈ 0.60 cu ft |
| Concrete block | 8×8×16 in nominal |
